"All About Physics O Level Textbook" is a very good textbook for O level physics student!

This is a new textbook (2013) published by Pearson. It is a very good textbook, as I shall tell you why:

(1) Every chapter starts with a mystery question, which makes you feel very curious and want to read and find out more. Imagine a chapter that starts out: "What is time? How big is the Universe?" Who wouldn't want to read it, even if there is no exam tomorrow?

(2) The authors try to link the subject matter with the historical and current development in the advancement of physics research. This is splendid!

(3) The authors do not, like in other textbooks, put strings of titles after their names, or things like "500,000 copies sold!" to hype up the book. They let the book speak for itself. And indeed it does. And the authors' humility is admirable.

(4) The chapters are sprinkled with lots of colorful and interesting local Singapore examples to demonstrate the principles of physics. This book makes you realize that the laws of physics apply everywhere, yes, even in Singapore, which is not so special after all. The laws of physics cannot be violated, even by Singapore.

(5) Throughout the entire text, there is emphasis on estimating the order of magnitudes of all the various physical quantities, which is a very important but often overlooked skill for any physicists or physics students.

(6) Needless to say, the illustrations and photographs are very vivid, and the explanation very lucid.

Ten years series does help

Doing Ten Years Series(TYS) does help.
Now I make my students do TYS starting from year 1976!
You need to do a lot of sparring before the real fight, in order to study the attack style of your opponent.
Put on your sparring gloves!

Let me help you to get an 'A' grade in physics

I am a responsible physics tutor whose job is to secure my students an 'A' grade in A Level Physics Exam.
However I will not hesitate to sack any students found to have bad attitudes toward learning.
Physics is like martial art, you need to practise a lot and prepare to fight the opponent in the boxing ring during test and exams. You need discipline. You need to study the various strokes to attack a problem,

My student got A

My student from ACJC got A! Suprising because she failed so many of her tests you know, haha.

2012 A Level Result is Out!

Can you teach physics to your grandmother?

Yes, if you can teach physics to your grandmother, than you have become a good teacher. And we need good teachers. Sadly, I heard some Singapore good physics teachers have left teaching to join the casinoes. Sad thing for the students.

One note about teaching physics - be informal!

One tip I would like to share with you all about teaching physics is:
Do not be serious, serious!
Use of informal language and even Singlish, Hokkien mixed with dose of jokes and humour help to convey the concepts across much much better.
That is also the reason why textbooks that "talk" informally with readers are so popular and expensive - they are user-friendly :)
Of course, once the students understood the concepts, they have to write it down formally. But that is secondary you see  ?
And physics is not maths =- that one controverial thing I would share with you in a later post, it has got to do with the right brain - left brain thing(y), haha
